Also it just illustrates how utterly boring being a Goldfish must be..... and all you lot can do is mock, you barstewards!!

....... Maybe the 'better place' thing isn't too off the mark after all...

Boring? If you had a memory of only 3 seconds everything would be a new experience.

Since goldfish are actually red perhaps you could call your next one ketchup which is what Froomo said to Wiggo in the TdF last year, innit?

That said, Red? You tell that to Lilo and Stitch..... and... well, any Goldfish really. They are orange surely? (admittedly approaching red sometimes)..... and when they aren't orange, they are white/silver like Lilo is.... or brown (with subtle, but lovely hints of orange) like Stitch was/is.....or.... orange and silver like Wiggo was (yes he should have been yellow, but he wasn't) or they can be black/grey, and so on.

Being all over white/silver, Lilo is probably the most colourless fish in the universe!

My condolences, MDB!
I had met Wiggo briefly, he made a lasting impression

Thanks.
Yes, when you saw an example of a clean(ish) fish tank. I wish I'd let you see Lilo who was in the other tank at the time, but seeing Wiggo, the big happy orange fish who wanted to see what was going on all the time, especially if you had food for him obviously had an impact on you as it was!!

We got him to do various things like swim up to the top and actually eat the food out of your fingers, he was great. Lilo has always been a bit shyer though.

so mad dog how do you train a gold fish ?

Once they know who you are (they do seem to recognise people) and are familiar with an object or scenario, you can teach them to do things by association. For example, being in a glass tank, they can see you pointing to things and you can often get them to follow your finger/hand (foot even.... don't ask), so you can lead them to things (it also helps in getting them out of the way of something). You can get them to trust you enough to eat out of your hand, and there are other things too. It takes time, and some fish are brighter/more receptive than others, it has to be said (Wiggo was quite good at it all. Lilo seems more laid back) but you should, nonetheless, get them to do simple little tasks of some sort. I even have heard stories of fish trying to alert their owners to things that are wrong with their tank/set up etc etc.

3 second memory my arse!

To have healthy fish, you have to take into consideration how big they naturally grow, and have a tank of a relevant size. It is all too easy when they are young and small to get a small tank, but it doesn't work and is why many fish like goldfish die needlessly after a year or two (along with other things like poor water quality). They don't simply grow to the size of their tank and then stop.... well, ok, they do, but obviously in a tank that is too small, they will be stunted, and might still be growing internally, so they quite literally become too big for themselves, which must be lovely for them as they die.

Also, DON'T Get too many fish, its all too easy to get lots of lovely looking fish, but as they grow, they need space, and anyway, the more fish you have, obviously the dirtier it will be (Goldfish are quite messy too), water quality will suffer and diseases might spread more easily.

Goldfish are probably the most abused and neglected type of pet out there due to general ignorance and the people thinking they are just jokey little animals. The simple fact is however than in the wild, they can live on average 20 years, and the oldest goldfish ever recorded in captivity was 43! FORTY THREE!!

Umm, that said, I still don't know what killed Wiggo (although it was mercifully sudden) but the other fish seem to be ok..... for now....
