I do keep my regular daily hack bike looking pretty crappy. Scratched up with random bits of spray paint here and there. I've changed the qr for alen key skewers and it wasn't an expensive bike to start with.

All that said I've just finished building up a half decent racer and had it powder coated and the Raliegh badge lovingly glued back on and it looks good enough to nick. I just don't leave it around like I do my crappy looking bike. I doubt I'd get mugged for it but still. There's no way I'm going to give it the distressed look as it's taken time and effort to get it how I want it.

unless there's something missing from this story .- are they really driving round in a stolen or false plated van robbing folks of their bicycles -asking to be caught fairly easily if so, and even easier if their own van. All sounds a bit odd

Agree, unless theres suddenly a large demand for bikes to order in nigeria.
