Well, despite what I said earlier I seem to have sussed it after spending most of the afternoon working out what the problem was.

In my case it was a setting in the anti-virus software that needed to be changed, then once the updater had been coaxed a bit it has successfully loaded the latest updates.:okay:

What a palaver.

Any clues as to what you changed? I'm still battling with this problem.

I eventually found this page on the Microsoft site: link, which has various things to work through and try. Method 9 has the instructions about the anti-virus software. I then had to go through the manual for that too to find how to make the changes.

I'd like to point out that I was winging it a bit due to lack of knowledge and that the page has a note at the start saying don't try this at home as it's intended for IT professionals, so don't blame me if it goes wrong.;)

Here for rides.
The Crater upgrade takes forever to install, and typically, the upgrade only seems to deliver functionality that is useful to Microsoft and not to me.

Was that the actual "crater" update or the prequel - one of mine has spent about 2hrs updating this morning but its only the prequel

Thanks. I think I had tried most of the things suggested there and update has now just finished successfully! I left the computer running all last night and Microsoft was obviously busy pumping all sorts of stuff down to it. I plucked up the courage to restart just after 10pm tonight. It has just finished (really!). I've now got version 1703. The big boast is that I now have a faster browser; can get emails; and there are more apps.
(It's also tied the disk in knots - never seen a disk that fragmented after 2 hours of use!)

This afternoon (and this evening) the laptop has updated to the full "crater" - came back just now and the update had finished and I thought i had my first W10 faill - however - I was just a restart short of a pound - the crater doesnt seem to do anything superdoo - but then again W10 for me doesnt do much - apart from work - which is all i expect from an operating system - maybe when it gets to my desktop i might notice some differences
