"winning" on eBay

I bought some £150 bib shorts a few months back when they were reduced to £65, wore them twice and didn't like them, so decided to sell them on e-bay, started the bidding at £30 to ensure I could buy some other shorts and that was all I got, £27 by the time I knock off fees.
I would therefore classify the buyer as a winner and me a loser- those were 2 expensive bike rides

But if you'd risked starting the bidding at 99p, you'd get more initial interest, and the possibility of the watchers then competing and going over that £30.

If you make the highest bid in an auction, it doesn't seem odd to me to call that 'winning'. It's competitive, and you came first: isn't that what 'to win' means? I agree that using the term when it's a 'buy it now' is just a silly bit of hyperbole, but it doesn't worry me any.

As for sniping, there are three good reasons to snipe: first, it means you avoid getting carried away and overbidding; second, it means you do as much as you can to prevent counter-bidding pushing the price up; and third, it means you can 'set and forget', and at a time that suits you - you don't have to keep checking back and maybe having to rebid and then check back again.

It's an odd choice of words used, even when there's a buy it now price. Nowt else.
No bid made, but you've still "won" the item.

There was no BIN price. Got a good deal

Normally, I use eBay for things on BIN, like obscure vacuum cleaner bags which aren't available locally

I don't like PayPal hence I tend to avoid eBay

I always thought that winning on eBay was when some other fool out bid your ridiculous bid made late at night, offering well over the odds for something you neither like or want.

You missed out "drink having taken". It should be just after "late at night."

Much of what is on there is over-priced by sellers or is just cheap tat.

You have never had to buy something specialist or obscure that you can't get locally or even nationally then?? It can be invaluable some times, and, it isn't always over priced.

Yes the wording doesn't bother me in the slightest, even with the 'buy it now' things as, hey, it is only a WEBSITE?

I HATE last minute snipers. It just isn't cricket and I wish them all a life of sh*tting Cacti covered in curry powder and Deep Heat!

I will set a limit, but I try to avoid any sneaky last minute things. Life is too short.

I will just bid my highest amount and leave it there. If it pulls the price up then so be it, it is what I will pay, AND, if I am then outbid, then, well, good luck to whoever it is if they want to pay more!!
