Do kids start with pebbles?

Arf arf... I think there are smaller stones, yes, but generally, everyone starts with the full size ones. It is why you are unlikely to hear of someone starting to play when they were 4 or similar, unless they are well developed for their age.

Them stones are deceptively heavy you know and played over 2 hours, that is a lot of pushing!

Thankyou, that was interesting and as a curler, I smiled at certain bits in recognition.

Also it annoys me when people slag it off, as any Curler knows, there is so much more to it that it appears.

I hadn't realised that's how they prepare the ice, the behaviour of the stone makes a bit more sense now. It's basically a winter version of bowls but with the curved trajectory being created by the surface rather than the object.

(Or bowls is a summer version of curling, depending on your point of view)

Trust me, there is so much more to Curling than bowls, I kinda' wish people would stop making a direct comparison, but that's just me, I'm biased! 😏😝😆

Well, you still create a curved trajectory by rotating the stone when you play your shot. A wrong 'handle' can muck up a shot as much as anything else.

You rotate counter clockwise for a left bearing curl, clockwise for a right curl.

You were also talking of how they prepare the ice - The act of spraying it with hot water to 'pebble' the surface also adds an extra bit of grip to your shoes and it helps create the noise of the stone rumbling over it too - It's called the 'Roaring Game' due to this.

My point was it's the interaction between the stone and the surface compared to the weighting in the wood. There's an asymmetry being produced but by a different mechanism.

The tactics baffle me, I sometimes see them put one down and think it’s a terrible shot but the commentators rave about it. I understand the basics of putting guards etc. in rather than just trying to get everything as close as possible to the centre but still haven’t got a clue with some of the stuff they do. Then again, I’m the same with snooker because the most I can visualise is two shots ahead. Would like to try it sometime but doubt there’s anywhere near me (I’d also like a go at proper speed skating, I’ve never seen a sport that is obviously so physically demanding that looks so effortless).

The difference in bowls is that the target (jack) moves around and can be manipulated in game as well as all the other balls in play. So you are not just aiming at the same place all the time.
