Winter walking in Switzerland

Has anyone had any experience of a winter walking holiday in Switzerland. We would like to be independant rather than part of a guided tour. Does anyone know from experience how well the paths are cleared for walkers or have any other useful information?

On Ski Sunday in the winter there was a feature on the 'Haute Route', which although done on skis looked very appealing.
