And the bicycle, unlike the car (anymore) can be worked on and fettled quite well by its owner. Soon enough, you'll be browsing Gumtree for bicycles to fix up.

ok so after yesterdays 19 miles or so, today i set off for work, no issues, worked the day and set off home. Took me just over 20 mins to get home, not blisteringly fast - Barham court to Ringlestone Maidstone, but when I first did the same journey about a month ago, it took me well over 50 minutes (several stops) .

I feel great after it, and wish to hell I hd started this cycling malarkey years ago.lol

When I lived in Paris I had an apartment about 2 kms from my office along broad, flat, leafy boulevards. Every morning I used to get into my car and drive in stop-start traffic down the boulevards, onto and across the Avenue Charles de Gaulle, down the opposite service lane, across again and back up my side service lane then into the underground car park. This could take me up to 40 minutes, slightly less the other way. I walked it in 20 minutes a couple of times when snow caused traffic gridlock but it NEVER occurred to me to buy a bicycle. Ridiculous though it may seem, even though I had cycled everywhere as a youth, a bicycle was just the last thing in my mind. The mindset just didn't exist, a young executive drove a car and that was that. Crazy, eh?

Craig, I would say that you are like most people i.e. you start cycling for a reason but you quickly come to find that you keep cycling for a different reason to the one which got you cycling in the first place i.e. you love it for the simple joy of being out and about on your bike :bicycle:and all the other benefits that come with it .

Now having said what I have, I agree with the other comments, that come what may you will eventually hanker for a better bike / components and the lure of these things will eventually beat you and you will find a way to get them
That's happened to me after getting back in the saddle! Deciding between Whyte Carnaby or Giant Liv thrive 2,hard....
