Sorry, but he was wrong. Pedestrians have the ultimate right of way on any highway (except motorways) - if they are already on the highway and he clearly could see that people were on the highway from the description given. And in practice you stop rather than hit someone anyway, even if you are right. You don't hit someone to make a point.

On the club ride, we nearly hit an old woman. We were going along, doing about 17/18mph in a line, not long after setting off and going through Burton Joyce, there was about 10 of us.
Old woman, walks slowly to the middle of the road, and i just got the feeling, she wasn't going to stop walking, so i slowed down. She didn't stop walking, and sent us scattering to go around her.
Old woman shouted that we should of stopped to let her go.
Non of us wanted to say anything, because she was very old, about late 70's id say.
But, there was another woman out in the club, who tags along for abit before going her own way that's in her late 60s, so she shouted something at her.
She crossed at the side of one a crossing, that's just got a centre waiting bit(name shot out of my mind) so no idea why she did cross all the way, and not half way, then wait for us to go past.
Wouldn't of been nice if someone had hit her, would have been a big pile up.

They are Pelicans if the green/red man is on a display on the other side of the road, high up. They are Puffins if the green/red man is on a display on your side, at arm height. They are Toucans, if they are also cycle crossings, and Pegasuses if they are shared with horses.

Not at all

I like Pelican crossings and hate Puffin ones as an adult crossing my children across when they were small. Somehow it was easier to watch them and the light on the other side of the road than to be looking at one immediately near me.

Just try watching for the green man at a puffin crossing when there's a crowd of people waiting - practically impossible as only a couple of people can actually see it and they're usually not paying attention. It's not unusual for this to lead to people crossing on red as they've all missed the green.

I've never some across the Pegasus term. I'll have to have a look out for some when I'm out and about. Are there any in/near York's surrounding towns and villages?

yep, courtesy does seem to be in short supply. From postings here, elsewhere, my limited personal experience and conversations with others, it seems that many cycle/walk/drive in London in a very selfish manner.

But it is a very different beast, when we came back from Sheffield on Saturday evening I couldn't believe the level of traffic. We whizzed down the M1 and then crawled across London to Clapham Junction. At times we were regularly caught, and passed, by pedestrians. This is 8-9pm and it was like a rush hour nightmare.

Unbelievably it would have been quicker for the meet point to have been near me. London folks get train out to here to meet myself, Teef, and his van. Reverse at the end of the day and Teef would have been able to stay on motorways for the majority of the driving. Though further Teef could get to my place from home faster than he could reach Clapham Junction.

On the other hand.....move to Hull????.........hmmmmmmmmmmmmm

On a slightly related note, I was waiting to cross the road at a confusing junction yesterday, pushing my bike, and the lady in the car at the head of the queue at the pedestrian crossing hooted at me and beckoned me to cross in front of her.

I pointed to the red man, and then the two cars coming the other way, and declined. She rambled cheerily at me, but I couldn't quite make out what she was saying....

she was saying "damn, nearly convinced another one"
