Re "Please" and "Thankyou". Culturally, we Brits use it more than most. In China, if a family member or friend does some small thing for you, like lend you their pen, you shouldn't say "thank you", it would be considered weird. But it feels uncomfortable for me not to

please and thank you are rarities nowadays, which is a shame, we're (me and the missus) always complimented on the fact that our children are polite and have manners. My response is usually "why would i raise them any other way?"
