Work getting in the way

Am I on my own or do others find that all too often work gets in the way of getting out on your bike?

My job means I travel somewhere in the region of 30,000 miles a year and currently I am managing a project that will go right through the summer and in to autumn; October to be exact. Not only is the project increasing the miles I have to drive but the hours I am working every day; net result I am only able to get out on my bike once a week at the weekend and it is starting to p*ss me right off

Opposite for me, I find it easier to build the miles up when I am at work, commuting 60 miles each day helps

I am self employed and work definitely gets in the way of cycling.
I was going to ride tonight but was so shattered that I fell asleep on the sofa half way through a cup of tea.

It used to. I was working in a couple of jobs that were 30 miles from home, but involved a fair amount of travel, so the bike riding was the odd ride at weekends. Long hours, nights away from home and two young kids - not ideal.

I changed jobs in the end, took a £10k pay cut, but I get to ride to work every day. Been there over 6 years now, and about to move offices with an extended commute, but not by much as I extend mine anyway.

Though in all seriousness, living that close to work makes it easier to do the extended distances

I've recently turned down a couple of job offers that would get in the way of cycling. Current hours are 8:00 to 16:00 and 4 miles from home. giving lots of time for evening rides

I feel your pain ! Ive washed my water bottles planning an early morning ride , priced a few jobs up and its now midnight .

I jacked in full time work ten years ago and bought my own little self employed business so that i can take days off,or work half days so that i can cycle whenever i want. I'm earning less now than i did ten years ago, but working half the hours. I've seen too many people die in their prime,and too many people have their houses taken off them to pay for their care in later years. Working long hours and having savings doesn't give you a guarantee of a happy future.

Family as much as work, though I can't say I mind that happening too much. My daily 6am ride of 30km has turned into a 12km pootle with my 6 year old around the nearby university campus for an hour before school, which is a great start for him. So tonight I had to get out for an hour at 5pm to fit the daily run in too But I work from home so this is much easier to manage.

If you really wanted to ride, you would find the time.

Family is the biggest stopper for me as the kids are still at that age when they want to be with you and the wife seems to think riding to work is enough , oh and she has the habit of not getting up on a Sunday till after i should have left for a club run .
Roll on about 10 more years when the kids are in their teens and ignore dear old dad !
