It's where I get to have a nice brisk one mile walk across town to sit in a nice warm office doing as little as possible while sitting listening to my work colleagues talk drivel for eight hours and then a nice walk home and then pay me for it so I have money to do things that are interesting.
When I was younger (My mum was a teacher), I remember teachers being told to report to the closest school when it was snowy. That way there were generally enough teachers to keep the place open.
The only time I can remember the school closing because of the weather was when the boiler failed, or the school ran out of coal.

My work never closes, and I've never worked anywhere that has done in almost 30 years, and FWIW my school's never closed either in the 70's and 80's.

My school years were between 1946 and1961,during that time my school never closed due to bad winter weather and we did experience some bad winters
We all lived within walking or cycling distance as did the teachers I live close to th village school and the senior academy the staff car parks are barely big enough to accommodate all the cars.parents I know who live within a mile radius will drive there children to school.Ok I know some parents have to transport there children to school due to work commitments.

Not a chance of skiving off - 7am start and I'm likely to be in the freezer room (-18°C) the then the chill room (2°C) of the local cold store by 8am for a coupple of hours.
So some people are correct, civil servants or even ex civil servants do not know what work is.

We had the "be prepared for snow , pack a shovel and a blanket " speech last week, you are expected to turn up come hell or high water.

How near is your local secondary school from home. Ours is 10 miles on rubbish mainly untreated roads.

I don't expect my work to be closed, but TBH most of the snow is gone here so a non-issue. That said, I'll take the van and leave the bike at home, not work the risk in icy weather and I'm fortunate enough to have the choice.

The MET issued a warning saying anyone who has to travel today should take some blankets, a sleeping bag, some extra clothing, including a scarf, hat, gloves, warm fleece, a flask of hot water, 24 hour supply of food and drink, a torch, spare batteries, a fully charged mobile phone & portable charger, a hot water bottle, a tow rope, a filled petrol can, a first aid kit and a set of jump leads.
I looked like a right clown getting on the bus to work this morning.
