I'm on a permanent late shift, don't start till 10am, two hours after everyone else, and don't finish till quarter to seven, on the Friday of the last week of the month we are expected to work till we finish.

For a few weeks in October or so I work from dawn until 10 at night. For the rest of the year I'm on a 3 day week.

Self-employed, so often working late........sitting here now, got loads to do.......but messing about looking at shoes....amazon books....art products for something else I do.

I am past the point of productivity now, I just keep typing the wrong words, gawping at the screen and know that tomorrow I'll look at what I wrote tonight and think 'what a load of crap' and have to re-write it!

I did sit outside all yesterday in the back garden, working at lap-top in the hot sun though!

The business I run, don't own it, supplies bedding plants to garden centres. We make our profits January to June with a 10-12 week period mid-March to mid-June being absolutely crucial. By end of June our profits or otherwise have to sustain the business till the following March when cash starts to flow again.

During peak season all management have to work every hour required (unpaid). It isn't a discussion it's just done. In the same period staff work a six day week (paid). Without this regime we couldn't make profits and the country would be duller!!!!!

During the rest of the year management take back any reasonable amount of time also without question. For example I shall probably "pop in and out" from now till late August. Anything urgent, like the potential new customer we have to quote by tomorrow, is done by remote access. That does include three weeks holiday.

Flexibility is simply an essential part of my working life, as is the opportunity to take time back when appropriate. I like it.

on the last 6 week run in on any prioject the late working goes through the roof.

on the last building we handed over on the olympivc park I was coming in at 15.00 and going home at 04.00 . we tend to have to do lots of long nights as we get to a point where we can't turn off supplies for commisioning reasons during the day .

we are now into the last 4 weeks before handover of 2 buildings and i am currently on day 10 of X and have been in at 06.30 till whenever the tasks get finished.

Have done all these sort of hours since i was an apprentice . when I was hourly paid I used to get handsome overtime pay. now i am management level its time off in leiu. which worked out great last year as i had most of the summer off . will be late autumn this year so lets hope for a hot October

It doesn't happen much now, but if breakdowns dictated it, i'd work until finished although i always got paid , indeed used to get bonus's for it.
Ive seen me (does that make sense ?) start at 6am, finish at 7pm, just get home, knife and fork in hand...phone rings  ...breakdown. Back to work, replace an electric motor on a machine that took me till 3am the following morning. That is rare, but the responsibility comes with the job, so i'm ok with it.

An old friends just packed in her job. Office based, always working through lunch, then 'expected' to work an extra hour or two...unpaid. F'kem...i simply wouldnt do it. Outrageous.

I work in maintenance myself but we cover shifts, are you the only one to do the job? Or you on call out all the time?

Every year there is a two to three month period when I will work late two or three evenings a week, usually an extra 3 to 5 hours per night. I do it alone and I do get paid for it.

Yup, the only one. There used to be two of us, so call out's didnt happen, they were covered at all production times. But since the slimming back in the company, i'm lucky to have retained my position (it probably should have been me that went) so i'm happy (ish) to cover what's neccessary.
Actually, i've got an extreme and memorable reason for working late in the past...
Working in part of the newly opened port in Nueva Palmira, Uruguay, started at 8am, worked till about 3pm, had to leave the port because the Uruguayan president was visiting to see the new setup. As soon as he'd gone, we went back and carried on installing equipment until about 2am the next morning..
Whats wrong with them ?, were'nt we good enough ?

My most productive time is between 8 and lunchtime. After that I'm cruising, doing less urgent stuff and planning future trips. I leave the office bang on 5:30 every day and never stay late. I've already put in an extra hour from 8 to 9 anyway.

On overseas trips I end up working all hours, which includes entertaining but I don't mind because it helps the time to pass and I feel I'll be home and back on my bike sooner.
