We’re on bottled gas down here which is pegged to the price of petrol which we’ve seen some big increases lately. That’s sure to come down again. Thant’s what Hank says anyway. “I’ll tell you what”.

I agree.
The fewer miles you do, the more you should have to pay because you could probably do without a car so there is no need to clog up the roads with one. Lots of us have had jobs where car use is essential and earnings are no more than average, not everyone can sit on their bum in an office all day long and just use the car for a trip to Tesco every Saturday.

Agreed, although probably a system that takes rural and urban mileage into account would be sensible and therefore unlikely.

That's what I was thinking. I get more news on cc than the actual news (which I hardly watch). I had no idea about the things @gavroche mentioned although I heard grumblings about less carbon dioxide around. Now that confused me no end. On one side there is global warming (no wait, it's called climate change now) due to too much CO2, and now there isn't enough CO2 to go around. Ah, it's not the right type of CO2.There may well be some shortages but can't see it being too much of an issue for most of us who are capable of or even know what going without is all about. Can't see it putting an awful lot of pressure on your pension but I can see why it may feel like that at times. Watch less news and enjoy life more, would be my advice.

Im all for road pricing. I get arriss f***d for car tax, but barely do a thousand miles per year. Meanwhile, a taxi driver in a late-ish Pious doing 40,000 a year pays zero, so is causing far, far more pollution and congestion and does so free of charge.

I suspect the proposal is for a form of "road pricing" where a value is set on the use of a given road at a certain time of the day. This means you can drive a long way in a rural area and pay a fairly small amount, but a relatively short distance in a city during rush hour be potentially more expensive.
Fuel Excise Duty only charges for the amount of fuel you would use, so it technically does the opposite and penalises rural drivers.

I expect any road pricing will be for new cars due to the difficulty and expense of retro fitting the necessary equipment to existing cars.
Just as well because knowning the UK theyd charge car tax and slap on some road pricing to raise some readies.
