Worse road hazards . . .

Riding out in the road would not help with this drain cover!
we have loads of those around here - you just have to know/watch the road carefully and avoid them! Not great but I have met worse (One road I came across in Ireland actually has a telegraph pole roughly where that grid is on the inside of a left hand bend! - If I could remember the location I would - all I can remember is that we were on holiday in the Galway area around Headford and it was opposite a church!)

Learnt the hard way as a child about the 'victorian' style grids (horizontal to the curb) and never ever go anywhere near grids anymore.

I nearly came a cropper on my example the first time that I encountered it! I was looking around at the scenery and was not expecting a dodgy drain cover to suddenly be there under my front wheel ...

yep - often happens where they have widened the road by a couple of feet to allow more vehicles to pass on narrow country lanes! So that is mostly all of my cycling roads! Hate them to be honest because the line of the join is always in the wrong place, as is the grid and the joins are all breaking up and filling with ice at the moment. They usually have a lower grid than surrounding tarmac as well - sound familiar?

I know where my towel is
Glad I don't ride that close to the kerb (or over drain covers at all).
There are some rather large potholes on my commute, and some rather poorly patched ones, which are a pain if you don't know the road and are cycling at night.
.

I actually came across several of these grids on my 'commute' last night and my leisure ride today. Might report the ones on the ride today, but the commute is pointless. Cheshire East never repair anything, but West Cheshire & Chester are much better at repairing/replacing things.
@ColinJ Several of the ones I spotted yesterday where the grid was in the lane after it had been widened, were actually 2 grids side by side, taking up even more of the inside of the bend! I had forgotten about that little variation!

Blimey!

I forgot to mention the time I descended from Blackstone Edge to Ripponden and discovered that metal thieves had stolen every drain cover on both sides of the road! PS As depicted in the next post! :thumbsup:That's a descent where you would usually be doing 30+ mph all the way down ...

Guilty yer honour..

I've been down one in Chorlton. Front wheel borked, me over the top (where was that thread about how many times tyou've fallen off-forgot about that one).

Amazingly, went to Hellfrauds (Boardman bike) the same evening and they changed the wheel foc. Hows about that for good karma!
