run free Barney, I bet he had a wonderful life with you and yours @shouldbeinbed , I too have been in the same position myself on a couple of occassions, it is never easy but you did your faithful friend a kindness.

The following poem is inspired by this Norse Legend

By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill,
Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still.
Where the friends of man and woman do run,
When their time on earth is over and done.

For here, between this world and the next,
Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest.
On this golden land, they wait and they play,
Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day.

No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness,
For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness.
Their limbs are restored, their health renewed,
Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued.

They romp through the grass, without even a care,
Until one day they start, and sniff at the air.
All ears prick forward, eyes dart front and back,
Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack.

For just at that instant, their eyes have met;
Together again, both person and pet.
So they run to each other, these friends from long past,
The time of their parting is over at last.

The sadness they felt while they were apart,
Has turned into joy once more in each heart.
They embrace with a love that will last forever,
And then, side-by-side, they cross over… together.

We've just come back from the vet without this fella, seen here in happier times.

16 or so years old, getting frail & weaker recently, but while he was still active and had a dignity to his life he's soldiered on. I got up this morning to find him collapsed in my bike store, he couldn't walk or control his functions. We said our goodbyes and took him in as an emergency appointment to save any further suffering or dragging out the inevitable, the vet agreed he was beyond comfort.

G'night Barney.

Grand age for a dog of that size and a nice looking fella.

I've been through the same - worst day of my life bar none.

You did right by helping Barney on his way.

Condolences.

We always have two dogs in the family and we've been through it many times. Console yourself with the knowledge that you gave it a great life in a loving home.

Thanks folks, not the first time we've been here and won't be the last but it never gets any easier even knowing we're doing the right thing by him, he's been getting more frail for a while and we knew when his quality of life wasn't there, he'd not be kept struggling along just for our sake.

The other 2 keep nosing round the house looking for him.

He's been part of the family for nearly 10 years and was the special one for me as he'd come to us a physical and mental wreck, finding and bringing out the real dog that had been battered into submission and abject fear in his previous life in Spain was a hell of a labour of love.

That he got to ~16 is very good going in Greyhound terms anyway and a testament to the fighting spirit that got him through the first part of his life.

There's a rescue dog out there who will cop for a comfy settee and their own bowl in the corner of the kitchen, but maybe not just yet.
