Firstly, I am not jumping in on your thread, I just want to offer my condolences and, hopefully some comfort.
As much as it may or may not help, at least you gave Barney a good life and helped him in his time of need to ease his pain.
I have lost two cats in the last 12 months on the resdiential road that runs 15 feet away from my flat. Having cats all my life (I am 40 now) I have never lost a cat in a road accident. I have lived at my current address for 3 years and 1 month. One cat, Georgie was barely 6 months old, a beautiful looking female cat. Her and her brother, Bungle, followed me as I went to the shop one night and the missus had gone out. I shooed them back towards the flat and they stopped following me. I got to the shop, bought my things and decided to take the long way back as it was a nice night. I couldn't have been gone much longer than 15-20 minutes. As I got near to the flat, I saw something in the road, but couldn't quite make it out as it was about 9pm and turning dark. There she was, lying in the road as if asleep. I picked her up and blood trickled from her mouth. If I had not gone the long way back, I may have prevented her death, as she would have been in the flat with me. All she wanted to do was be with me outside and play, and due to some tosser (probably driving too fast as they always do down this road. It's a 30mph residential road but many drive 40, 50mph plus) she lost her life. She is now buried at the bottom of the garden.
A few months ago, my 6 year old cat, Beavis (yeah, I know) was out and about outside. She was the intelligent, moody, hard as nails but loving matriarch. None of the other cats in the area messed with her. It was light. I had fallen asleep and woke to the sound of the missus screaming and banging on the window, something that still haunts me today. It was horrible. She had gone to take the bin out and the cat must have seen her and darted across the road. A car hit her back end. I ran out half asleep to see my missus holding her, lifeless. She had apparently dragged herself across the road to get to my missus, her back legs not working, taken three or four deep breaths as the missus comforted her...and then she took her last. She is also now at the bottom of the garden.
The guy who had hit her turned around and came back. I pulled him over and he, at first, was very polite. Then he started saying "I didn't see it, it came out of nowhere, shouldn't be out anyway, it's only a cat". My missus asked if he was sorry and he just shrugged his shoulders as if it was nothing. Completely ice cold. The anger and rage I felt, you wouldn't believe. I would have hit him there and then, but I could not comprehend his attitude and what he was saying. I just went blank. I walked away, but then he started to shout at my missus. I told him to get in his car and f**k off before I lost my temper. His son was in the back of the car and I had sworn. I didn't even see the child until he pointed him out to me. I apologised, but then he turned it all around. He was more concerend that I'd said the 'F' word in front of his son than he was for killing my cat. Accidents happen, but there are ways of dealing with them. I didn't blame him at all for the death of my cat, but his attitude aftewards shocked me. I have never seen the car or the guy before or since. Sadly, I think it was just a cruel twist of fate that he had taken a wrong turning onto my estate, resulting in the loss of my second cat.
So, please find some solace in knowing that, although the decision you made for Barney was hard, it was the kindest, most loving thing you could do. I had no choice. Remember the good times, as much as you miss him and as much as it hurts. Some people don't understand, pity them
