When I was a child, 50+ years ago, it was a treat to be allowed to catch the No.18 bus to the nearest town to spend my Christmas or Birthday book tokens at WHS.

I stopped using W H Smith when they started forcing chocolate down the nation’s throat. Our local WHS has taken on the post office. It’s now totally rammed with PO customers in a random queue. I go to a village PO instead now.

My local Halfords is generally good for my admittedly limited motoring needs. Customer service is fine. The only time I take my bike in is to park it inside if I’ve forgotten my lock!!!!!

I find Halfords very good for motor spares, though their pricing can be a little quirky.

For instance, I wanted a sump plug when I was doing an oil change. The cost was over two quid, yet for only half that in the next rack were the plug and washer together. I took both to the till and there was no mistake on the prices, that's what they were. It wasn't just a short term glitch either, that was over five years ago and when I looked recently it was still the same.

The staff at any Halfords I've visited have always been polite and eager to help, though in the bike section their knowledge can be hit and miss.

I haven't been able to see the point of WH Smith for years. Their range of books is not a patch on what it used to be and everything else they sell can be bought cheaper elsewhere, and not just by going online.

I was in Hampton WHS on Thursday.
My wife is a book hound, i have to say i agree.
Im a novice reader ,but it seems a bit void of so many books now.

I think Waterstones is fantastic, i dont do E read and never will, my reading is quite poor in that i read slow ,but a good book is so engaging.
I may try the listening books one day as i listened to a few when i was in hospital for 3 weeks.
They are totally engrossing with a good narrator

What sort of books are you into? I have a few audio CD here, and boxes of tapes. They have got me through hours of boring driving.

With the combination of the internet retailers , incomes not keeping pace with the cost of living for a long time and brexit, it is very difficult to maintain a high street presence unless like cafes etc. you have to be there.

Has anyone noticed that most Next stores have a Costa?
Maybe a good marketing ploy ,but we're getting overrun with coffee.
Maybe the High street Banks should have taken this line?

I use my local Halfords, mainly when items are on special offer. They have an unusual method of storing items however and often it takes several staff ages to find anything. I do wonder how they keep going.

WH Smith's is overpriced and poorly staffed. They seem to survive only through the rail/bus station and airport ones doing well.

Clintons Cards is overpriced and Sports Direct, well, isn't either.

The spread of Costa (and the like) probably has more to do with the phenomenal mark up on cups of coffee and the fact that a lot of people are now seemingly unable to function without it.
