Some people are very good - I'd not try out-speeding (say) fossyant over the commute.

Just plough your own furrow. Keep riding, you'll see the improvement.

Let me tell you about the other day, I was cycling along into a 45mph headwind, up a 1:4 hill, averaging 35mph, I was overtaking cars, then when I got to the top Lance Armstrong was there and he said he'd been watching me climb that hill and God Damn I looked good and would I like to join the British Cycling Team at the next olympics, but I turned him down because I didn't think it would be enough of a challenge.

All this was done on a BMX, you understand.

I took the computer off my bike as I was spending too much time looking at the info on it so now I've no idea what speed or distance or averages, etc I'm doing.
The only information I have now is I've been out for a few hours and had a lovely time in the countryside.

This is one of the reasons I don't get involved in much bike chat. People just make stuff up and it also becomes a knob measuring excercise with regards to bikes you own, how many, type of equipment, routes you go on and how long it takes you etc.... It all gets rather tedious.

One of my first posts on here was about a LEGOG me and a mate were maybe trying to do until he couldn't. I then quickly realised looking through other posts I couldn't be bothered getting involved in some of this kind of "I can go faster, longer than you"

Obviously written by a slowcoach with a rubbish bike. ;)

why do you care though?

I know full well people are faster than me. I know people do more adventurous tours, with more mileage per day. It will be ever thus.

It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter if they're having more fun than me - as long as I'm having fun on my ride.

This is the great thing about cycling - ride on your own, or with a group, compete, or don't. Have the latest & greatest carbon gear, or a matching retro setup, or don't. Just have fun.

Maybe you should sue your English rather than Maths teachers, then, as the quote wasn't about an average of 19mph but "over 20 mph".

... I can average over 20 mph on my commute; it's 7 miles, give or take and I have done it in 19 minutes - once!
7 x 60 / 19 = 22.1mph. ;)

My computer tells me I have taken about 6 hours to do the last 80 miles, averaging 13mph. I'm happy enough with that, it's on a variety of surfaces and includes the time wheeling the bike around and I have a great time doing it.

Answer to the OP - undoubtedly!

I can only think some people don't know the difference between average and maximum!

Can't say I'm too bothered. Firstly I know I can't do fast any more (I'm doing well to get up to a half of the performance I could manage in my 20s!), and secondly it's not as bad as some of the claims I used to hear in the pub after club events when I was in my 20s. I enjoy cycling as much now as I ever have, and the speed (just over 10mph average) doesn't come into it.

The figure thats usually given reasonably well is distance, and it's fairly clear who quotes speed and time accurately. I view anyone who claims to be faster than the people who went the fastest in my university club's TTs with suspicion, even though bikes are fractionally faster now. I could never get near them BTW. Some of the claims I've seen on here would put those making them among the world's top elite riders!

That said, there are some fast cyclists around and some post on this site.

I don't care surely you should know that from my posts. I have always rode when I felt like it and enjoy it on my own. Just can't be bothered with all the willy measuring on some posts as I'm not fanatical. Cycling is not my life like some. Just a very pleasuable addition to it when times allow.

I haven't said a word..............;)

Depends upon your goals - my commute is training for me - my time is limited and it's difficult for me to get in long rides - the longest ride I've done this year is about 30 miles...quess who's got the Cheshire Cat in 3 weeks....eek
