No! Turn it off, and get a fully registered gas engineer out to fix or condemn it. Don't use it. If you don't already have some, buy carbon monxide detectors immediately.

Carbon Monoxide poisoning is no joke, I nearly lost 2 friends to it. One of them was at imminent risk of death as the levels of gas in their body was so high. This was thanks to a crap repair job by an unregistered engineer resulting in a dangerous flame like that on their fire. It shook them up so badly they actually carry detectors with them now when they travel, as well as having several at home.

In the early 1980's a volatile when drunk bloke (who was a spitting image of Midge Ure from Ultravox, just had to mention it) from my then local pub was found dead in front of his still on gas fire. He must've led down after a skinful and passed out, then died from carbon monoxide poisoning the inquest into his death recorded, but obviously in more legal speak terms. I should talk as I had a habit of doing the same, but thankfully my gas fire was safe, though I did sometimes wake up with first degree burns!

I haven't had a gas fire for several years, and anyone I know who has one I make sure they have a detector (and check it!).

My friends fire was putting out a flame exactly the same colour as the OP. In fact they were actually pleased with the new 'pretty' flame, I'd have to ask them to be sure how long they were exposed for but one was worse than the other as they'd been at home alone for a few days with the fire. Scary stuff.
