Wrapping your chain in insulating tape

I just wanted to inform you about this strange practice I thought it may be funny that’s all. I will not be posting anything else in future.

I'm glad you posted it, I don't tiktok so unless someone had told me people are making those and that people actually are doing it I wouldn't have thought anyone could be so stupid.

Not a bicycle but I found an indian video showing someone doing it to a motorcycle chain, the presenter (its not their video apparently) on the commentry calls it "nonsense" and "do not do this as it is dangerous, do not be fooled by videos online".

Its in Hindi but Youtube has options for auto-dubbing and captions.

A foolish true tale ....

As a younger, much younger cyclist, I used to go to the local Kirby cycle track, to watch the racing. I noticed that when a rider had punctured, they put on another tubular and used tape round the tyre and rim to secure it and continued racing.

Thought, what a good idea and the next day, secured my tubs with tape as well.

Lasted for about 20 yards, when I quickly realised that it wasn't compatible with rim brakes!

I suppose that if you wrapped the chain in tape but allowed the sogs to poke through the iside bit then it would protect the outsideof teh chain to some extent

Of course, getting it to work with a derailleur might be tricky

and moisture (etc) would sneak in under the tape and linger rather than drying out - so it would help the rust

but I can see that it has the germ of a good idea
OK - also the germs of quite a few bad ideas but.......

This 'repair' survived the 5 mile ride home from work after I noticed that the tyre that I had just fitted was falling apart after the commute that morning. I avoided using the rear brake and the tape was surprisingly intact when I got home.
