It made it work.
Sorry - that was the non-engineer in me; actually I've no idea what it did, but it works and it's manufactured by Cisco so I guess they know more about networking than me !!
I can now see every wireless device in my home - PC, 2 laptops, phone, wifi radio, Archos 605 media player - and share between them all, as well as share printing via the printer attached to my PC. I'll be buying it as soon as the free period expires, and I reckon the $29 cost is more than worth it for the instant solution that it supplied.
