Remote control went dead yesterday and whilst the missus was trying to console me and telling me it's not the end of the world, I was having none of it.

Panic set in and i ripped the back of the remote off only to discover the warning about replacing the batteries within 10 minutes

So the mission was on, I figured I'd lost 3 minutes sobbing like a baby when i discovered the problem so that left me 7 minutes. Ran out to the kitchen to get fresh batteries only to discover there were none.

Okay take a deep breath and check again, they must be there, maybe it's the tears in my eyes blinding me.

but no i wasn't wrong. Think i only have 5 minutes left.

Okay no problem there's more than one remote in the house so stop wasting time and steal batteries from them, but time after time they were the wrong type

Time is running short and it looks like I'm onto a loser. It looks like I'm going to have to get up to change channels

Wife points out that the batteries in my bike light would work as they are the same size. Stunned I could barely talk but managed to point out that no matter how desperate i was the bike always comes first.

So it's true in times of need a man shows his true colours

failed in the mission and remote lost it's code, but bike lights worked perfectly on my commute this morning

Tisk. You should of changed batteries, then cycled to the shop in black clothes to buy some more for your light.

Surely there must be a way to re-programme the remote with the correct code? Or find the original remote that came with the TV - which should be hard-coded.

Failing that, should have left the 'dead' batteries in the remote, until you'd got the new ones ready. Although dead in the sense of the control not operating, the batteries would still have had enough volts to keep the codes secure.

Sorry...

Pete, I eventually found the code today and reprogrammed it and bought some fresh batteries so everything is cool in the house.

Adam and Thomas seriously, you want me to leave the house ? ! !

It was a " man down " situation and a Marine never leaves a man/remote behind.

Simple solution here is to put the old batteries back in. They will not have enough power for full operation of the remote, but they will have enough to keep the memory of the remote set up with whatever code was previously entered. Then go and buy the replacements and then fit them.

As an additional safeguard, it's a good idea not to press buttons while the batteries are removed since this may help to discharge the capacitor in the remote that retains the memory while the batteries are being changed. To help further, if the remote takes more than one battery, only take out one battery at a time. This minimises the time that the remote has no power supply - the 10 minutes limit applies to each change of battery, i.e. it is not cumulative.

Hope this helps someone.

Les.

Wife said something about leaving the remote alone and "hold the ladder still" prior to the batteries going flat, so i felt i should maybe step in a fix it

Then, upon removing the batteries from his bike lights, he notes a warning label saying that unless the batteries are replaced withing 10 mins, the lights will never work again...

Everyone please stop inventing stuff, there is no need for anything else !

NO! carry on inventing stuff, we need more glade air fresheners that look like rocks!!!!!!!

it is the pinnacle of our human evolution, to have air fresheners that have three fragrances, change between them, sense that someone is there and look like a rock!

I'm hoping that they'll eventually make them shaped like a rubber duck for the bathroom
