At last, somebody who knows enough to be worth buying a drink ;)

Mine's a Westvleteren 12, because although I have yet to find the 12 in stock (despite trips to the source), Westvleteren 8 tastes like anybody else's 12...

Of course, no bar except the one attached to the abbey is allowed to sell Westvleteren beers; so if it's unavailable I'll be happy enough with a De Ranke XX bitter.

Re-stocking trip coming up on Tuesday week - woohoo!

Lucky you Nick - keep your eyes open for W12 - I found a few bottles in an off-license in Antwerp when I was last there, so some does get into general sale.

I've been enjoying Poperings Hommel Bier recently; our "local" has it on draught at the moment.

There seemed to be a lot of brits in town over Easter - we were treated to the spectacle of some braying oik explaining loudly how English beer is the best in the world (this in a bar with a selection of 60 or 70 Belgian craft beers including a selection of rare geuze and kriek whilst said oik drank cooking lager).

Ah, Poperings Hommelbier - nice enough in the bottle, but an entirely different (and better) proposition on draught. Particularly in Watou!

Re. braying oik - at least nothing decent was being wasted on him

Lovely - I was enjoying a bottle of Sammy Smiths 'Old Brewery Pale Ale' on the weekend. Funny how the Smith family went different ways, one part produces some of Britains finest beers and the other John Smiths watery stuff in a tin.

If it was my only drink in the pub I'd have a Timothy Taylors Landlord pale ale.

Hand-pulled John Smiths' is a joy, especially when it's looked after right. As, indeed, is Sam Smiths'. You can keep your Timmy Taylors though.

You can't beat a pint of ale for slaking your thirst. Bath Ales Gem or Hopback Summer Lightning for me.

If I wasn't too thirsty, and a seeing as it's a bar, rather than a pub, I'd have a Mojito, made to FM's recipe.

The Failsworth bit gives it away. Get up to Yorkshire and drink real beer. Not John, Sam or even Ethel Smiths. It's shite. Landlord is however the best pint on the planet, and if you disagree again we shall have to ask you to step outside:boxing:;)

I used to agree, but my sister (who used to run a pub) tells me that Landlord is well known in the pub trade as suitable for diluting, and filtering back from the slops trays. It's because, unlike many other beers, it can be done without significantly altering the taste.

What are you..... a bunch of students?

I would never walk into a bar with enough money for just one drink, how un-sociable.

And what about the pork scratching?

Might a different slant on the subject be "If you could only ever drink one more (type of) drink?" i.e. you could only ever drink Timmy Taylor's Landlord bitter for the rest of your life?
For me, a lot of the joy of ales and whiskys comes from comparison with others, so if I were only ever to drink one of them ever again, I'd think long and hard before making a final decision.

And do a lot of research!;)

A pint of Harveys Sussex bitter for me. I've drunk beers and enjoyed them from all around the world but it still outperforms them for me.
Having said that I did have nice pint on Mars a while back but I guess we're talking about your home planet.
