The distance in between is a very specific result of how maps are drawn
Basically the sign has to be on the edge of the official line
and as the line on the official map has a specific width then the 2 signs have to be positioned on opposite endge of the line
so the distance is based on the thickness of the official line splitting the 2 areas on the official map
This is known to be true
and I certainly do not talk a load of rubbish for humerus value

I'm surprised no-one has developed a sign that falls apart if you try to steal it for places like that
There are quite a few around and if they cost 10x the normal price then it would pay for itself
