This is Waterloo Mill in Huddersfield, an old textile mill on the Huddersfield Broad Canal. It is now a Gym. It doesn't look much better from the front BTW!
It absolutely would have been, Oil was one of the last things still to be transported by Canal - there was a big depot on the Aire/Calder Navigation near Allerton Bywater that took delivery from the East Coast.
I'll put this here. This is now a distillery, but only recently. It was a toy factory and home to the Crolly Doll which some may have heard of. They are very collectable now for the people into such things.
