Eurrggh... Not the 40th birthday I'd envisioned - my eldest son brought the gift of Covid to the Melville household! Had the joy of an outing to a car park behind the Bet365 stadium to shove a swab up my nostrils... Then fretting about childcare for the next 10 days... FFS!

Bleh bad luck mate… Hope the boys ok. And congrats on joining club 40 👍

I presume you've had your vaccinations-everything will be fine, albeit a little inconvenient
Cheers Andy, yeah we’re both double-jabbed. Andrew’s just a bit groggy and lost his sense of taste somewhat. It seems likely that his little brother will be positive when we get his PCR results back…😟. That’ll be fun trying to work out the childcare around!

Some time back we were chatting about older riders. I can't remember why or precisely what, but I do remember that I said I used to ride with a guy called Andy Hicks, who was the 70s age group national champion for road race and TT.

He used to train for TTs by coming out with our group on a 70 mile ride and just sit at the back on his TT bike. He always used to sprint for the top of a hill and generally won most of them. He was an absolute machine!

Well, he's featured in this GCN video.

He's now 76, living near Bath (he moved around 3 to 4 years ago to be nearer his kids) and riding for Bath CC. The video makes no mention of his national racing. Andy just says he started riding when he was young and did a bit of time trialling.

Not the most stunning of video clips, but a pleasant enough watch. I just thought I'd share as I mentioned Andy on here.

He also talks about riding in Mallorca and how he now takes 2 days off when he spends a week there. I was there with him about 4 years ago when he took no days off and dropped me on a hill coming out of Port de Pollensa!

DBR Series starting on Monday. Long races but might be the shock that's needed after a summer away from racing!!

Hopefully I'll be entering in Cat C to see where I am. Be nice if anyone wants to tag along!

I have a 70 mile sportive Sunday, so will see how legs are Monday. I'm on leave next 2 weeks so hoping weather turns and I can get out more.

@<Tommy> and anyone else interested - I'm signed up for the "British Triathlon Summer Series Handicap (Hare & Hounds) Race" at 19:41 (for Cat B) on the Volcano Climb circuit tonight.

I think that's the one you wanted to go for but do correct me if I'm wrong!

I've signed up for it as well, as a c. Hopefully the long climb will give me a chance to see if I can put down B numbers.

I strongly suspect my numbers are going to be C-Cat myself but I'll enter B (as I should) and see quiote how far off the pace I now am!

I’m up for it @bridgy

I think first race back after a lack of high intensity stuff for a fair time. I have to try and remind myself not to be to disappointed with the form and not bail out of frustration. It’s a bit of a throw expectation out of the window and just tell yourself it’s the first step back isn’t it!

I think it’s the perfect race for a form test @mjd1988. Short enough. A steady not too steep hill. And a group working together. I’m actually on the brink of looking forward to it now!
