I wanted to ride a crit race but it seems they’re all on the new scheme. And quite a few of the other races too. I’m not against it at all to be fair. I join A cat races from time to time if the course suits it. It’s just bad timing.

I am going to race this today though if anyone fancies some easy meat…

It’s kind of my own little fitness test to see if I can justify putting myself into the team on Tuesday.

Category enforcement seems quite dynamic. At first I was in B. Yesterday and for the last few days I could enter cat C. This morning I've just done a hard 10k C race round Central Park and managed to get my first gold. (Zwift said I was 3rd but several B riders were booted by ZP for riding in C) I've just checked, and that effort has now dumped me into Cat B again for enforcement purposes.

I won't be able to complete the TT, unfortunately. Had an old friend from uni stay over last night which was great, but ruled out any riding last night and today! 🥴

I did get my saddle level today though @<Tommy> @bobinski 😇

Got a techical question regarding new wheels. I get a clunk sound/feeling fairly frequently (approx 50% of the time) after starting to turn the cranks (not at hub engagement, usually a second or two after).

Three examples in this short vid, the loudest/clearest is the final one at approx 1:30:

The first couple of times it happened I thought it might just be "bedding in" and didn't think much of it, but isn't getting less frequent. Not sure if this is something to raise with Wiggle (problem with the hub?), just something to expect with an entry level hub, or possibly an issue with the way something has been fitted (seems unlikely but I've sent the vid to the mechanic anyway). Any thoughts?

Does it matter which gear ratio you’re in Nick?

It only happens shortly after you’ve began peddling? Not also if you increase power later?

Behaviour is identical inside and out @CXRAndy - I first noticed it on the road. Wheels are new and I noticed this issue almost immediately on their first ride.

@<Tommy> it doesn’t seem to be affected by gear ratios at all, and isn’t triggered by a surge of power. Consistently a second or two after engagement of the hub at steady power (and low power too, all sub 100W in the video).

I initially wondered if it was a stiff link in the chain or something but mech and chain both seem fine. Never noticed any shudder from the mech when the clunk is heard and felt.

Never encountered anything like it before, but not something I really want to live with!

Is it the spokes twanging? I've had similar on new Aksiums before, but only really when I'm out of the saddle and hammering it, and it did stop after a few rides.

It sounds similar, but feels harsher than that through the cranks and happens at very low power (sub 100W) so I don’t think so. Maybe I should put a few of my monster sprint intervals through the wheels and see if they “bed in”?!

I’m taking a punt here… but I think it’s the way the free wheel mechanism is engaging. I don’t think it’s the bearings or I feel like it would be more continuous as you carry on peddling. I’ve opened hubs before to maintain them and I think the parts are called the pawls or something similar. It basically allows the hub to freewheel but then engages like a ratchet when you pedal. My guess is that noise is a slight slip and then it engaging. Maybe they’ve overgreased it in the factory and the pawls aren’t going back into their original position properly.

I guess there’s a remote possibility the cassette isn’t on square or it’s slipping slightly but I don’t think so.

It’s not right though whatever it is mate. I’d stop using it or if it gets worse they might blame you (worst case scenario maybe). It’s not that hard to take the free hub off for what it’s worth. But it’s for them to sort out really.
