and i tower above the likes of Tom cruise and even Winston Churchill - not that i have just frantically searched google
Probably taller than me. I'm not 100% sure how tall I am, but somewhere between 5'7" and 5'8"

I was reading JoeFriels blog and I found this calc for whether its better to stand or stay seated whilst cycling uphills.

. The lower your body mass the more advantageous it is to stand on a climb. The greater your mass the better off you’ll be staying seated. One quick and simple way to come up with your body mass is to divide your weight in pounds (1kg = 2.2lbs) by your height in inches (1cm = 0.4in). So if you weigh 154 pounds (70kg) and you are 72 inches (180cm) tall your “mass” is 2.13 (154 / 72 = 2.13). I’ve found that for males the best climbers are at less than 2.0. These folks should stand a lot (think of Marco Pantani). Men in the range of 2.0 to 2.3 tend to alternate between standing and sitting a lot (for example, Lance Armstrong). Those men at 2.3 to 2.5 are best advised to sit a lot (like Miguel Indurain). Folks over 2.5 usually avoid hills. Women should use a scale which is about 0.2 lbs/in less (for example, under 1.8 are climbers).

Im 2.88

I should have a medical certificate and permanent excuse not to ride up any gradient:tongue:

Lee is ~1.97 :okay:

2.6 or thereabouts for me. Probably means I should lose weight but....

I actually stand a fair bit riding up hills, outdoors. I drop cadence to around 60 rpm, its effective at stretching my back out, also gives me a speed jump, but also ramps up the HR.
I would use it more indoors, except of the power lag from the Neo feels like Im wasting effort whilst the Neo catches up in power reading

Regarding the blog does he say why it’s better for people with higher body mass to sit more?

It all seems a bit anecdotal from the bit you quoted Andy. Standing is good for getting weight over the pedals. I don’t get why that’s not advantageous no matter your height / weight. Maybe I’m missing something.

I’m guessing most people go between standing and sitting to varying amounts. Contador always seemed to be dancing on the pedals. Quintana seems to spend a lot more time seated in comparison.

It takes more effort proportional to size to stand up whilst cycling. While I might produce alot more power standing, I also drain the reserves more quickly than a lighter rider who can sustain lengthy periods stood up .

You rarely see a bigger rider or sprinter staying with climbers whether amateur or professional on a sustained climb.

I get that the lighter you are the bigger the advantage going uphill. I don’t get why this means the larger you are the less you should stand.

Forget comparing light with heavy for a sec. Compare two people of the same weight. Assuming both are say 90kg. The one who stays seated longest is better off?

Does he back that up with evidence? Could you link me the blog bud.

Had another crack at stage 2

Felt good, had a much better warm up, joined the start line in good time, right up at the front. Joined a time with a field about the third of the size of my first attempt to keep a better eye on stragglers.

Much better pacing throughout, last time around there was a full 50 seconds difference between my fastest lap and my slowest, this time it was only 28 seconds. I learned all the lessons about keeping out of the sticky draft and attacked all the climbs at the right time, much better race-craft, felt great.

time?

...2 whole seconds faster :banghead:
