Problem with legs is that it's extremely difficult to do this at home - quads are big and you would need a lot of plates; a proper squat rack is expensive and without it you would need spotters. On top of that, starting to lift will hurt your cycling performance as you will be extremally sore at the beginning.

That was me yesterday I increased my max front squat lift, failed on lift 2, catch bars caught the weight. Ive recently started again with weights so are quite a bit down in my best. I no longer do behind the neck squats. Im not interested in bragging numbers. I find im far safer-no need for a lifting belt with front squats. Once I get to around body weight 4-6reps, that's is enough-for my age its fairly decent strength

I agree with all that. I've started doing some weights lately. I'm a bit wary of squats, so am doing leg press instead. What is your programme?
Hahaha, my current 'programme' is to stop being fat!

A while back I used to do a lot of gym and that included legs twice a week. A dedicated session on Tuesday and a secondary session on Thursday. The first one was heavy squats - 10 minute warm up (could be done on a bike, I think) and then 8 sets of 4-5 reps with a weight that I could maybe do 6 times max. 5 minutes between sets - I know, seems way too long but worked a wonder. Then on Thursdays I did the back. That included deadlifts that also engage legs so I usually topped it up with weighted walking lunges OR a heavy sled push OR a weighted Bulgarian split squad.

Haven't been to the gym in along time. Recently bought a lot of used stuff and am doing all my workout at home. Don't have space for a squat rack though  Thinking about a bigger house with a dedicated gym, actually.

I think Carl has developed an excellent sprint, with 900+ Watts.

I doubt my best ever 1400Watts would be beat his W/kg chasing to a line.
Mine really is just practice .. nothing special. My sprints used to be rubbish, but now I attack every sprint in every race where the Prime counts, and over the last few seasons of races I've improved massively.

Yep I recall I used to beat you in most sprints back in the day. These days it would be the other way around.

I'm working on my sprints for this season though - so watch out

I’ve been watching video from this guy Brian Duffy jnr. I don’t know if you guys are familiar with him. But it kinda of helps make my point. His sprint is around 1100 watts for 15 seconds I believe. And he’s winning a bag load of cat A+ races and I think he’s considered one of the strongest guys at the moment in zwift. 1100 watts doesn’t seem that much when you think there’s guys here who put out more from spinning. But what is more relevant is that he can produce it at the end of a cat A+ race and all the fatigue that comes with that.

I totally agree with your point. Your max possible sprint power is important for FTS or FAL points but for race winning it is what you can put out when you are nackered and breathing out your #rse at the end of a hard race that counts.

It would be unusual for us to be sprinting against you though Tommy - as you finish higher up the field :okay:

I don’t know mate. If we raced last Wednesday I think you have as much chance as me if not more chance if the race played out the same.

But generally I just want as many cc’ers in the same race. And on the same team of course!

I just have to avoid the short crit races now to avoid being promoted which is a shame.

There was an interesting gcn video with a beginner sprinter, Ollie and a pro sprinter. Al out effort. Pro got 2000 watts and the beginner got more than Ollie.

As Tommy says doesn't really mean anything unless you are in a race but there is probably some benefit to training it a bit.

Cavendish isnt gonna win a sprint finish after a mountain stage as he'll be 20 mins behind. That's why WVA is a monster

I saw that one. Interestingly, the pro sprinter did more (over 2.2kW) but Zwift didn't register anything above 2kW. They only found out after looking into the data file.

And to Ollie's defence: The beginner was 50% heavier than him ;) (both did just about 1kW but one was 100+kg and the other 68kg).
