Are each category easily identifiable within the mass start?

Should be, they're using the standardized ABCD jerseys from previous racing system plus a new E for Racing Score pen.

I like mass start events, even though I cant keep up, its nice to hang on fro a while and draft whilst seeing some of my group fall away.

Feel 'special' as lower cat mixing it with the faster guys

Same here. By far my favourite type. Always someone slower, always someone faster, and very satisfying if you can hang on to the front for a longer while.

Signed up in B and hoping to ride it today. So far not a lot of participants, and no one in A to chase, but hopefully more will come. If not, and I end up in no man's land, I'll just do some intervals within the race and get some workout that way.

Yeah big fan of mass starts. Always funny to watch the D riders successfully attack the as and bs at the front.

Looks like you held with the As until near the end and won B. Well done.

I may do more of these, it was a good length race.

Question: Why did the companion app not let me sign up to A? I thought one can go up a cat if they wish, just not down obviously.

Same issue for next week:

I seem to remember vaguely that a few ZHQ races deliberately prevent people racing up. It could be that the Epics are one of those?

Yes - it is https://zwiftinsider.com/epic-race-series-april-2025/

  • Mass Start (with categories): these races have always been mass start, to help give everyone someone to ride with. They still are, but riders will be signed up to racing score-based categories.
  • Riders will be forced into the proper category (to counter some of the complaints about people racing up to reduce their racing score.)
  • Each category will wear the same kit, so you can easily spot the riders you are racing against.

With the simplicity of the Racing Score system (finish in top half to increase points, bottom half to decrease points, depending on minimum effort and 5min power in last 90 days), preventing signups in higher pens should be standard.

Yeah it's still not working as it should, but Zwift hasn't put any engineers on it since January. It hasn't been tweaked at all.
The influence of other people's ability is SUPPOSED to be included, but it is so weak as to be invisible in almost all cases.

It's still grossly easy to manipulate your score down.

Been announced earlier today that 25Km per calendar month ends at the end of July, in a few days time!

14-days unlimited use for new accounts on pc remaining, but no mention of verifying the supplied email address, so riders can still make up bogus email addresses to get 14 days use at a time.
