I bought a garmin strap which is complete under HRM. This has been bomb proof for 7 years.

In the early days of the Garmin HRMs they were not the most reliable, a well known improvement was to cut the strap, removing the piece behind the HRM so it just attached to each press stud, I still use a Garmin strap cut as described but with a Wahoo HRM

I found that actually unplugging the HRM from the Strap after every ride saves the battery life considerably. I reckon the HRM stays awake far longer with the strap attached
I reckon that is true.

I do it not only to prolong battery life, but also, like @bridgy, to clean the salty sweat off. I rotted through an unwiped dumb turbo trainer in one winter once! (I used to wipe the sweat off everywhere that I could see it, but had not thought about sweat running round to the underside of the trainer.)
