How quickly can you get your foot down, when you screw up a shift on a steep hill?

Pretty quickly judging by todays effort when the stupid thing decided to drop the chain off the front on the downshift (for the first time ever) whilst pushing up hill fully loaded touring. Just managed to get a foot down, although I suspect that if I had'nt I would still be there now trapped like a tortoise on its back under a ton of camping gear.
