Real middle class is:

Pieds-a-terre furnished from Ikea
Real ale in bottles
Radio 3 because Radio 4 is just getting too populist
Seagrass baskets for the recycling
Billy bookcases for Granta
Small-screen TVs because why on earth would you want a big one?
Discovering these brand new things they call smartphones.

I think there are many levels of middle class.

Also can you be working class if your profession is signing on each week? I have often wondered that.

I'm very middle class. I listen to Radio 4 when I'm out in my old pickup truck, and have a bath every week whether I need it or not.

I can't believe you have more bookshelf space than books. Are you sure that isn't a furniture shop showroom that you mistakenly believe you're living in?

Only if the signing on is due to loss of a job through redundancy or illness,and if it doesn't exceed more than a year. Anything else and you are a layabout!
