During the foot & mouth outbreak in 2001 I was "asked to leave" the estate that the mountain Ben Cruachan stands on in Argyll by a shotgun toting estate worker. The landowner had decided to "close" the mountain due to F&M, despite the nearest outbreak being 200 miles to the south. I watched the local police assiduously patrolling the roads, recording the number plates of any cars parked up in case they had dared to commit the cardinal sin of setting foot on the hill against the landowners wishes.
An interesting time for hillwalkers in Scotland, and one I hope to never see repeated.
I re-parked further down the road, and claimed my peak that day via a route that was not in the guidebooks and was unguarded.
