I would imagine that from a purely commercial enterprise, this is good business for Man U. you can vote with your feet and wallet and not go to the games anymore but in the real world, there are many more who will pay.

Everyone said that when Beckham went to Real Madrid, the fee was too high, but they made that money back and more just on shirts alone.

is it scandalous or just jealousy? it's not as if the taxpayer is paying his wages... in fact, he probably pays more in tax each week than most taxpayers pay in a year, or more.

I would have thought the average UK income tax per annum is about £10,000.
So he will be paying far more each week that we pay each year.

Utd have contracted to pay him £85 million over the next 5 years.

He only commands those wages because so many people are willing to pay through the nose to watch him on Sky or similar.
Personally I wouldn't pay 2p to watch a bunch of grown men kick a ball around, it doesn't interest me at all.
If everyone had my attitude, he'd be on minimum wage.

If you love your football and pay your Sky subscriptions then you can't really complain about their wages, because it's you who is fuelling the fire.

What a load of tosh. A club wants to pay him that. They want to pay him that becasue having him returns more money from sponsorship and tv rights. The money they get comes form everyday folk who pay for Sky sports, season tickets, merchandising etc. It's not about Wayne Rooney, but about supplying what millions of people across the uk want to watch.

I hate watching football but have no problem with players earnign that as football is one of this nation's favourite sports.

He pays tax netting hmrc probably a darn sight more than you and me combined. Also, 30 seconds on google tells me he's donated far more to charity than I probably will in my lifetime.

That would be a matter for contractual negotiations and would not be the case as a matter of course.

It is extremely unlikely that the figures quoted are net of tax and as such he would be subject to Income Tax in the normal way

It's nothing like 60K. To pay 10K in income tax and NI with a "normal" tax code your would have a salary of about 40K

A lot of this top level football is commercialised tinsel town brand hungry bullsh1t. Ok so they are highly skilled but I'd suggest that a lot of fans could get just as much pleasure watching their local (really local) team play. If they really were football fans!

This is absolutely scandalous, Man Utd are paying Rooney over a quarter of a million EVERY week, he is already a multi, multi millionaire and does not need any more money, why not just accept a lower offer and pour the rest into British sports or another worthwhile charity...........he should hang his head in shame the greedy b******

More foolish are the silly folk who pay to go and watch them or pay stupidly high priced subscriptions the watch it on TV. And finally, would you want his face, £300k per week or not, looks like a short version of shrek!!

I think he deserves more. He clearly hates Manchester United and their glory-hunting fans (not all of them by any means, not the decent Mancs - I mean the home-counties Rodneys) so should be paid more in penance. With the money he's making - which is WAY more than the £300,000 per week being complained about on here - he will end up actually owning, or will be a major stakeholder of, his REAL love.

Why on earth should they? Any more than you would want to work for a couple of weeks for nothing? I have no problem with people earning whatever they want as long as the people paying it have a choice - unlike taxation, where any large local authority can waste £300,000 in a month and your average Government Department can waste £15 million without even noticing that it has gone.

It's obscene, really. It would take me somewhere between 6 and 7 years to earn what Rooney's getting in a week. Mad, absolutely mad. And such madness will ultimately lead to rebellion on the part of like-minded football enthusiasts, who will kick against this madness and reinstate SHOVE-HA'PENNY as the rightful heir in terms of sporting popularity.
