i'd add one caveat in that a 9 speed chainring that is for derailleur gears is designed for the chain to slip on and off it, and any slackness in the chain may make the chainring throw it off.
I'm using a 9speed chainring with a 1/8th chain on my single speed MTB, The chain is a bit slacker than I would of liked because i've got vertical dropouts and no chain tensioner (magic gear).
At the moment everything seems fine. Although I've yet to ride the bike in anger and the chain hasn't had chance to stretch. - A chain tensioner is at the ready!
