That could be skewed either way, I would imagine. Utter negligence sometimes when it comes to people or basic child care (e.g. Victoria Climbie) but woe betide you if you ill treat an animal. The British do have a tendency to go over the top with pets (me included) and would benefit from exercising the same level of care and compassion towards their fellow man sometimes.

Come here Chrissy Wissy - let me scratch you behind the ears and tickle your tummy...

Just ignore him, I agree that our rights of way and OS Maps are second to none, but I would never photo copy one, honest gov.

A lot of classic children's books were written by Britons, from Peter Rabbit to Harry Potter.

Is that so.

I think it more likely that English is the mother tongue of most of England, Britain, the commonwealth, the former commonwealth, and the United States of America. They were published by companies whose offices were in Cape Town, Bombay, New York and Sydney. Just as the winners of the Nobel Prize for literature were predominately non-English by birth, so I suspect were the classic children's books. Probably the best known of "classic" children's stories are Aesop's Fables, known only in english through translation.

Yea, well I got hardly any sleep last night and am feeling grouchy. I wouldn't mind if it was because I was cycling to Brighton, Southend or Bognor. Never mind I might be more positive tomorrow.

I'm not saying all great children's literature was written by British authors, just quite a bit. Alice in Wonderland, Peter Pan, Winnie the Pooh, Wind in the Willows: there's quite a bit. I agree foreigners have had some input. Aesop was Greek, Pinocchio was Italian, Hans Christian Andersen was Danish (I think), Dr Seuss was American. The Brothers Grimm came from Denmark or Germany I think.

But the national anthem's woeful though. But has any country got a good one? I think they have to be crap.

Lord grant that Marshal Wade
May by thy mighty aid
Victory bring.
May he sedition hush,
And like a torrent rush,
Rebellious Scots to crush.
God save the Queen!

Seems all right to me.
