So, I think I've settled into my route, after having tried the alternatives, I've stuck by my original plan. Thanks for everyone's help who advised alternatives, though. I still haven't tried the Rotherhithe Tunnel, but the video I saw of it on YouTube made me think that I don't want to... Perhaps if they build that cycle bridge at Rothehithe then I'll change my route.

Anyhow, from a total London newbie point-of-view, here are the things I've learned over the last week:

  • Cycle lanes seem to actually be a handy place to place manhole covers. Very interesting in the wet - I fishtailed on one the other day and have spun the back wheel on a few more.
  • Motorbikers seem to think they're allowed to use cycle lanes.
  • ASLs may as well not exist. Most cars (especially taxis) stop in them.
  • Every cyclist I overtake, for some reason, thinks they have to get back in front of me in the lights. Despite it being clear that I am faster than them and am going to have to waste time again waiting for space to overtake them.
  • There are some really fast Brompton riders - I followed one yesterday going up Southwark Bridge Road at over 20mph. In a suit! I was impressed.
  • Traffic lights are a pain. But then most cyclists seem to ignore them anyway.

I'm not saying that none of these things happen back home, but everything just seems to be more obvious in London!

I haven't got a Brompton anymore, but when I did have one I was extra-competitive in an attempt to make up for what I lacked in wheel size.

I reckon most cheese-knitters don't have far to go so they're able to cycle flat-out without having to keep energy aside for the other 10 miles they don't have to do.

My Brompton is the only bike I have that is useable at the moment and in trying to save money I've taken to doing my 26 miles per day on the Brompton rather than bike/train my commute. It takes me an hour to do 13 miles - takes me longer on my Carerra Subway.

Bromptons are pretty fast bikes. Small wheels give them rapid acceleration, and it's also a fair point that typically they are used on shorter commutes so you can expend more energy.

Interestingly, I reckon I'm faster on my 3-speed than I was on the 5-speed I had before it as I like to get up to my natural cadence as quickly as possible when I set off from lights, so I tend to accelerate very quickly through the gears.

It's not at all unusual to overtake road-bikes on a Brompton (but then it's not at all unusual to be overtaken by other ones either :-)).

cheese-knitter=rider of folding bike (usually brompton)
a phrase coined by someone from the C+ forum a few years ago, I forget who, that was well and truly bested one day by a lady on a pink folder
