So, I think I've settled into my route, after having tried the alternatives, I've stuck by my original plan. Thanks for everyone's help who advised alternatives, though. I still haven't tried the Rotherhithe Tunnel, but the video I saw of it on YouTube made me think that I don't want to... Perhaps if they build that cycle bridge at Rothehithe then I'll change my route.
Anyhow, from a total London newbie point-of-view, here are the things I've learned over the last week:
I'm not saying that none of these things happen back home, but everything just seems to be more obvious in London!
Anyhow, from a total London newbie point-of-view, here are the things I've learned over the last week:
- Cycle lanes seem to actually be a handy place to place manhole covers. Very interesting in the wet - I fishtailed on one the other day and have spun the back wheel on a few more.
- Motorbikers seem to think they're allowed to use cycle lanes.
- ASLs may as well not exist. Most cars (especially taxis) stop in them.
- Every cyclist I overtake, for some reason, thinks they have to get back in front of me in the lights. Despite it being clear that I am faster than them and am going to have to waste time again waiting for space to overtake them.
- There are some really fast Brompton riders - I followed one yesterday going up Southwark Bridge Road at over 20mph. In a suit! I was impressed.
- Traffic lights are a pain. But then most cyclists seem to ignore them anyway.
I'm not saying that none of these things happen back home, but everything just seems to be more obvious in London!
actually, that applies for 3rd and last point too... but you know what - i absolutely love cycling in London!!
