2017 Specialised hotrock 24" upgrading brakes

My sons Hot-rock 24 has rim brakes, he love trawling through mud, their constantly clogging up. the bike has mounts for disk brakes? any suggestions for mechanical disk brake upgrade?

Also the gears are the shitty twist grips which he finds hard to change gear, is there an option for rapid fire shifters for this bike, I've searched the web with not much luck?

your help would be most helpful.

The frame might have mounts for disc brakes but I don’t think the wheel hubs have, this could become an expensive upgrade?,

Stay with the rim brakes. Between the early 80s and around 2000 mountain bikers managed without discs and lived with the wear and the filth. Your son will soon outgrow the bike anyway.
