Had 2 of the things that frustrate me most about modern cycling in 1 race: the overwhelming favourite heading off up the road and the worst instance of group 2 syndrome I've seen in a while.

Group 2 syndrome was insane

The good thing is that they demonstrated it is possible to chase down MVDP when he goes. They were really well organised right up to the last moment (group 3 also chased well). Hopefully it will give the message to other riders that it is possible to bring the superstars back when they go solo if they’re prepared to work together. Yes, they ultimately messed up but I can’t recall the last time MVDP nearly got chased down, they took back a minute.

Woken up today and I'm still absolutely furious with them. MvdP went ridiculously deep there, and was ripe for the picking.
I don't think his form was all that though, it wasn't just that they chased well, I think he's a few percent off his peak. Never seen him look so ragged on a bike. Name a polygon, he was pedaling it.

Odd how the long break has changed. At one time it was the preserve of eg Jacky Durand to get TV time or a chancer hoping to get a win. Now it's perfect for a rider who can get the gap and hold it. Having group 2 sit up is just perfect but to be in group 2 and decide you'll contest 2nd and 3rd is crazy. Might as well have sat at the back.

It looks as if Sporza are covering the start of G-W as well as its main coverage.
They are on air from 9amBST tomorrow, for 2 hours, with main coverage starting at 12-30pmBST.

Yeah - and I quite like that the winner was the only guy who went all in (even though I'm not a true MVdP fan!)

2km to go and we still weren't sure of the likely outcome ...
500m to go and we're all totally flabbergasted 😆👍

The 4 chasers were all in... until they weren't.

Just the 449 watt average for 90 minutes from MvdP, his all time best......
So yeah, you're right, he's a few percent off his peak!
