First time on Vintage section, so "Hello!":hello:

What brings me here is that I've just bought a lovey Viscount Aerospace Pro which has the original hubs but mismatched knackered rims and rusty spokes, so the obvious thing is to re-rim them with something nice and new.... in an appropriate fashion of course!
So, what would be a good set of 27"alloy rims(36 spoke), and what would be the fastest rolling tyres to go with them?
Many thanks,
Hilton

welcome aboard and with one of my all time favourite bikes

i use these https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/tyres/gumwall-schwalbe-hs159-tyre-27-x-1-14-inch-2832630/ never had any issue's

these are meant to be good but a lot pricier https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/tyres/panaracer-pasela-pt-tyre-amber-wall-27-x-1-14-inch-32630/

not sure how much choice there is on new 27" rims , i have been lucky enough to buy quite a few sets of older rims in good condition . These might be ok https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rims-tape/alloy-27-x-1-14-inch-rim-polished-silver-36-hole/

When do we get to see bike pictures please

Thanks @biggs682
I'd like to put the natural colour sidewalls on if possible, so these Panaracers look fit for purpose....yes, they are a bit pricey tho aren't they?
SJS are very useful - those rims look good value, cheers.

The bike's being sent from the States soon without the rims. The seller has sent some decent shots of it so once I figure out how to post photos I'll show you what it looks like.
Not mint by any stretch , but classic silver/black with original fittings and the all-important(for me, anyway) Porthole Chainset.

Look forward to showing it off ^_^

Blimey you must of really wanted a Pro to have it shipped from the states. Panaracer tyres are well worth the money you may be lucky and find some 1 1/8" or even 1" depends what you want from your tyres I have Schwalbe's on mine.

PS depending on your brake drop you may get away with 700c rims which opens up the fast tyre option no end.

I'm afraid there's not much choice of new 630 rims - I think SJS do one in a single wall, here: https://www.sjscycles.co.uk/rims-tape/alloy-27-x-1-14-inch-rim-polished-silver-36-hole/
And this looks like the same rim built up https://www.freemanscycles.co.uk/27-x-1-1-4-standard-touring-wheel.html
Otherwise 2nd hand is probably the answer as Biggs suggested.
I asked Malcolm Borg at the cycle clinic about 27" rims and wheels when I had some wheels built last autumn; he didn't seem to know of any other than the ones above

As stevevw said 700 wheels may be the best bet, i had 700 wheels fitted to a Viscount Aerospace and did not even have to change the calipers, may even cost less to fit 700 wheels.

With 27" rims, ensure they are hook-beaded if you want to run decent high pressure.

p_q kind of thing. Virtually all modern rims are hook-bead, but old-stock 27 might need checking.

Very true, and worth checking, but unless fitting 1 1/8" tyres it shouldn't be an issue

If you're looking at SJS and amber-walled tyres, I strongly suggest you do not buy these.

I got a couple to use on my turbo trainer, and they're fine for that. But they're so horribly made that I don't trust their safety and I'd never ride on the road on them.

Recently I wanted to run some faster tyres on one of my 27" wheel steel bikes, and I found my brake drops would easily accommodate 700c so I went for a pair of wheels that size - and now I have GP 4000 IIs on it.

Any of you boys tried these? Kinlin T10 Alloy Rim 27 x 1-1/4"

I am in need of some 40 hole 27" rims and these are all I can find world wide. They come in 32, 36 and 40 hole and are cheap but are they any good?
