30mm Road Tyre Recommendations

I'm doing a 5 day tour this summer on my road bike; I currently have 25mm slicks and, although this ride will be mostly on tarmac I'm thinking that it would be a good idea to increase my tyre widths a bit to cope with the extra weight (we'll be carrying out gear) and the occasional off road sections.

I think about 30mm is the most I can get away with clearance-wise. Good puncture protection is key, and I quite fancy some tan side walls for a change...

If anyone can recommend some rubber that ticks the above boxes I'd be most grateful. I usually ride GP4000 IIs or Duranos so go not experience with anything made with more comfort/traction.

Cheers, Bill.

Not sure if they do em in 30 though, they certainly do make them in 28s

Or 28mm 4seasons- they would cope with the non tarmac bit better as have a bit more p resistance in them.

Hi BillyS79,

These aren't 30mm I'm afraid but you can get the Panaracer Pasela ProTite tyres in 28s.

I've just ordered them in 32 and I don't have them fitted yet because I've just taken the bike to bits for some much needed TLC, part of which was needing new tyres, and so I've not yet tried them yet in order to be able to provide any feedback at the moment.

I fitted some 32mm Vittoria Randonneur Pros' to my adventure bike to replace the original 28mm Continental tyres and these were very similar size-wise so either the Contis' were big or the Vitts' small? Either way the Vitts have proven to be a robust and fast tyre also capable of rough off-road use (but beware, they are effectively slick so care or skill needed for anything slippy off-road!)

If the folding Randoneur Pro is too pricey there is a wired, non-folding version that is more reasonably priced but comes with a weight penalty.

Why not use 28mm GP4000s
Well, I could. But as I'm shelling out for new rubber with a specific purpose in mind I thought I might as well go as wide as possible and get something different to my usual. Ideally with a bit more puncture protection.

Or 28mm 4seasons
They are on my shortlist. I have friends who swear by them. If they came in 30-32mm I'd likely have bought some by now.

Currently eyeing these up, but not sure whether to believe the marketing guff -

Not tan sidewalls but there again, function over form wins every time:
