4 way Give Way

I would normally look to give way to whoever is on my right ... bit like on a roundabout. Although not too sure how it works if 2 cars arrive facing each other. Then its down to us all acting as civilized, rational people , one of whom must be prepared to take a couple of seconds out of their busy day to let the other car go. Which is where the fun begins.

More junctions should be like this rather then with those crappy little roundabout jobbies. Put some stop signs on all the junctions ala in the USA and it all works very well.

Well, there's still levels of hierarchy. The bigger engine obviously trumps the smaller. North London beats South London. Then it can come down to the newest iPhone or who has the most cash on them.

In that case the position is analogous to the one shown below.

The "rule" here is the car turning across the path of the other gives way. Blue gives way to red.

If both are turning right, then "correct" way is to pass behind one another

If blue turning right and red left, then blue gives way to red (view it either as Red is a head, or blue crossing reds line) and vers visa.

ie the rules operate logially, just as if the "Give way" roads were a straight through road

There's a junction like that at the end of my road (although it's 3 way give way)... i tend to treat it like a roundabout and give way to the right. It seems to work.

It's amazing what people are capable of. When I was cycling daily into Canary Wharf, the traffic lights went out here. The first morning it was bedlam, but the second we were getting the hang of it (I assume most people went through daily) and by the third day the junction was working more smoothly than when the lights were working. Of course by day 4 they had put in horribly programmed temporary lights, and it was a total mess.

The problem is that often it only massively favours the main route and the minor routes don't get a look in and struggle to get through.

If you want to think about the psychology of this, and indeed the psychology of most interactions between Road users, you only have to consider ownership perspectives. Get rid of that and the roads will be a much safer and enjoyable place.

It to me, just looks like a marked 'unmarked' cross road. And if I saw it while driving, or cycling, I would treat it the same as I would an unmarked crossroad.

Ah, but the diagram is of no use to our Londoner in the BMW, because BMWs are not fitted with indicators.
