That too. I think this high cost of fuel stuff is just bleating really. If someone really, really needs to drive (and I mean need) they will find a way. Remember necessity is the mother of invention.

I had to go and collect a large quantity of shavings for my animals a couple of days ago from my mates joinery company in Stroud. Car did about 15mpg to get them with the trailer on the back due to the massive hill I had to traverse (twice).

Cost me £20-£25 in fuel for about 45 miles. Still a lot cheaper than buying the stuff in from the local shop though which would have cost probably about £80 for a similar quantity.

Find me a car which can legally pull a 2.5 tonne load whilst still doing 50mpg, and not cost £35k+ with £4kpa depreciation and I'll be interested - it does help your arguement if you can consider that not everybody has a similar set of circumstances to your own.

Yes we once had a huge manufacturing base in this country. We don't anymore. We can't bring it back. However, what you say about distribution falls under my point of penalising the motorist and passing on that money to enable people to pay the higher distribution costs by lowering general taxation.

Mobility of population isn't dependent on the motor car. Make it easier and cheaper for workers to move between jobs and locations. Offer security of employment to make it worth their while to do so.

Did your animals really need shavings? Do you need animals? Are you a farmer or a manufacturer? If we're talking about a pet pony for your daughter why shouldn't that trip be charged more?

And I don't see what's wrong with the "people will find a way" comment, it's been proven down the centuries.

There is no reason why we can't get the manufacturing back. We need somethingto pay for the people demanding stuff, but doing little for it.

Shavings are better bedding with rubber matting for horses than straw which is vastly overpriced now in any case.

Nope, they are part of the business I have on the side (manufacturing gizmo's for the Equine market - I export all over the world as well as serving the UK market - little acorns for now, but slowly, slowly and all that). The Equine sector is worth billions in the UK each year alone, so a real market which needs to be considered.

there are also liveries which are paying their way, and for now there are 5 animals which will be increasing to 6, maybe 7 in a couple of weeks which need bedding for.

In addition to this, I also work full time in medium sized engineering (manufacturing), and also export all over the world with a lot of very specialist componnents going to the middle east, Africa,Scandanavia, the EU, Oceania, the America's etc. so fair to say I am doing my bit in more ways than one.

What sort of business are you in anyway ?

I borrowed Womans fourbie the other day to take the kids to Cadbury World. It's a thirsty ish car, and I had my most precious possessions on board sobi took it steady, pegging the cruise at 60 most of the way (and achieving a journey average of 39 MPG).

Most other road users were hooning about like loons, burning fuel like it was water. How can folk claim fuel is too pricy when they choose to drive like that and fritter away 20 or 25% more than if they drove more sensibly?

Mine was bought as a towing vehicle to stay within the law when dragging 2+ tonnes behind it. I would nevr have got one as big as that otherwise.

No you didn't.

No, you are right, I could have paid someone else £80 to do it for me in their big lorry instead....Is there a point you are trying to make as I have already explained that they needed as part of a business.

No, you didn't need to pay someone £80, either.

The big lorry could possibly have made other deliveries. It may have proved more cost effective and fuel efficient to do so.
