I ride a Trek 520.
It's a '97 model - I adore it and we've covered a lot of ground together.
I have RSX levers which are beginning to not engage.
The right one has already been taken apart, cleaned and re-greased by a bike mech friend of mine - I am loath to do it myself.

I have a new rear wheel with a 7 speed free hub on it, with spacers. So the wheel will work with 8 speed + levers.

My front derailleur works, but has a lot of play in it.

Money is tight.

What would people advise?
I could get a second hand set of RSX levers - I've sourced a set for $115.
Or, I could get a new drive chain.
My gearing at the moment is:
Rear: 7-speed, 11 - 28 teeth
Front: 26/36/46 teeth

And I like this set up immensely.

Ideas people??

If the drive train is fine other than the 7 speed STIs wearing out, I'd just get a new set of 7 speed STIs. Sora are still available in 7 speed. RSX are getting old enough that I'd not be sure about a second hand set.

Hey Dr.
Thanks for the advice - I'm not a great fan of Sora.
The thumb button wrecks my head!

I *may* take the risk and take it apart to clean ....

Watch this space - I'll be back with a sorry tale to tell and a wee spring that I can't find a home for....
