My design for a quick release: A hexagonal prism, with a central hole cut with a thread to match the axle. This can be installed and removed with a matching tool to grasp the faces of the prism, and tighten using the axle thread against the dropouts. This takes only a little more time to install or remove than a standard quick release and has fewer components to cut manufacturing costs. The requirement for a special tool will discourage theft. The small time penalty using this device is little inconvenience to anyone apart from bicycle racers (and awkward buggers like
@KneesUp ) who need to make very fast wheel changes. Further, the convenience of quick releases on the front wheel has been largely negated by "lawyer lips" on forks, so the difference in time to change a front wheel using this device is negligible.
(That said, the linked device does look quite neat, except that it only works with external cam QRs, not the better quality internal cam ones. If you have fancy wheels you're more likely to have quality QRs that this won't work with.)
