Thanks for that. So if neither the PIN nor CVV needs to be sent to the bank's server, then hacking the wireless traffic from the terminal would be of limited value to a potential criminal.

Hopefully the blog, from a company trying to flog remote chip and pin machines, is correct they are secure.

It does say the 'details' of the transaction are transmitted to the bank's server, so it's not clear to me if those details could be of use to a criminal.

My brother, who is involved in writing software for the machines, seemed to be suggesting they do present a security risk although I didn't have an in depth conversation with him about it.

A linked point, which may be an urban myth, is criminals can make a contactless transaction on your card by being close to it, such as standing next to you on a packed tube train.

I'm sure I've seen tin foil lined wallets for sale.

Keeping a corona virus distance from other people might help to prevent that.
