Never heard of the bit about scarcity of marriages but bicycles were said to be altering the gene pool of a locality as young men could cycle to other nearby villages for courting purposes.

I remember this being blamed on the bus driver swerving to avoid cyclists, until an investigation found out there were no cyclists and the driver was speeding.
