I used to wheel them to my mates house in the next street and do the bucket and sponge bit in the garden. The more detailed cleaning and polishjng could then be done at home.

I just used an oily rag on the bike indoors. I had a lino floor on my (big) landing where I did my bike fettling. Admittedly it was a road bike so only road grime rather than caked in mud. If the latter I'd have taken a bucket of soapy water and a brush and done it outside

Can't you just take a bucket of soapy water and a sponge down and wash it off in the car park or on the street before you take it upstsirs?

On the walkway opposite my front door is a large park bench type seat. I invert the bike on that, clean and lube the gear side, then turn it around and repeat. Then put it away under its cover. No room inside.

Jetwash at the local garage? Then lube the chain as soon as you get home, or it'll rust faster than a very fast thing.

Of course, my real answer would be "What is this washing of which you speak?"

The abovementioned bench has never been used by anyone but me in all the time I've lived here. I don't do muddy, so I'm not dropping crud over everything, and I clean up afterward. If the bench was used as intended, I wouldn't be using it as described.
